Drywall is a commonly used construction material that is used to create walls and ceilings. Drywall is used often, because it’s easy to install and repair and durable. Whether you would like to install a ceiling or use drywall to repair or create walls, a professional drywall contractor can help.

Before drywall was invented, people had to use layers of plaster over supporting wooden strips called laths. The plaster needed to harden before a wall was complete, which was a long process.

Drywall was invented in the early 1900’s. It is made from gypsum rock that is mined and crushed. There are different types of drywall:

1. Normal drywall. Standard gypsum board wall with cellulose paper. This type of the drywall is the cheapest and comes in different sizes and thickness.

2. Mold resistant drywall. This type of drywall is made with fiberglass instead of paper giving is resistance to mold and mildew.

3. Moisture resistant drywall. This type of drywall is more expensive, because it is resistant to water making it great for bathrooms, basements, kitchens and laundry rooms. It’s important to remember that this material is water resistant, but not waterproof.

4. Fire resistant drywall. Also known as “Type X” this type of drywall is used in layers to receive a higher fire rating. It is required by some building codes. It is created using non-combustible fibers and must pass a strict test to achieve a Type X rating.

Drywall vs Sheetrock

Sheetrock is a brand of drywall that has become popular. Sheetrock comes in a variety of thicknesses and varieties. They make three types of fire-resistant panels and have moisture and mold resistant products as well. Sheetrock is manufactured in the same way as drywall.

Drywall Uses

Drywall is used to build additional walls. For example, you could use drywall to turn one room into two or turn a portion of a room into a bathroom. You can also get drywall with decorative finishes. You can also use drywalls to create ceilings.
