Save money on water with these home renovations.

Saving water means saving money. Your water and energy bill can spike if you have leaky pipes, old appliances, or poor irrigation. In states experiencing droughts, you could be subject to fines or usage audits. Thankfully, there are many home renovation projects you can do to save water and reduce your monthly bill. Many of them are simple and cheap to do.

Here are four home renovations to consider to save water and money.

1. Check your home for leaking pipes and faucets

If you have leaking pipes you could be looking at costly water damage in addition to a higher water bill. If you are seeing an inconsistent water meter reading, you probably have a leak. Check your water meter before and two hours after water usage to spot an issue. If the meter readings are inconsistent it’s time to call a plumbing contractor. Other signs of a leak include:

·        Moist walls
·        Mold growth
·        A decline in water pressure
·        Cracks in pavement
·        Higher than normal water bills

If you notice any of the above signs of a leak, contact a plumbing contractor near you.

2. Install smarter sprinklers

Today, you can install water sprinklers that have timers or rain sensors. Set your sprinkler timer to run early morning, so the water doesn’t have a chance to evaporate during the heat of the day. Rain sensors ensure your sprinklers won’t go off when it rains.

3. Invest in a low flow or dual flush toilet

While purchasing a new low flow toilet can cost between $100 and $300, it will save you thousands of gallons of water a year. It can also extend the live of your septic system. If you don’t have the cash to purchase a new toilet, you can fix the one you have. Over time, toilet parts can corrode, bend and become less efficient. Those leaks can cost you. Update the parts in your toilet and save.

4. Replace current appliances with energy efficient models

Do you have a top load washer? You can save water and money by switching to a front loading washing machine. They use half the water of a washer that loads from the top. Energy Star qualified appliances will reduce your energy bill as well.
