Discover when to replace your gutters.

Gutters are probably something you never thought about before you became a homeowner, but they provide a very important function. While you would probably rather spend your money on upgrading your appliances, refacing your cabinets or other home improvement projects, replacing your gutters and maintaining them can save your roof and your wallet.

Here are five signs it’s time to replace your gutters.

1. You can see cracks.

Cracked gutters can’t perform their function. Larger cracks are visible on dry days, but to spot small cracks, you may have to wait for a rainy day. If you have a few cracks, a gutter contractor may be able to repair them, but if you have extensive cracking, it’s probably time for a replacement.

2. There is seam stress.

Your gutters are most vulnerable at the seams where two sections meet. It’s common for leaks and separations to happen at the seam. In some cases, gutter seams can be fixed, but some homeowners prefer to replace their gutters once there are signs of seam stress.

3. You notice peeling.

Gutters with issues will cause your exterior paint to peel. Look for paint that has bubbled up or peeled away on your exterior siding, then check the section of your gutters that are closest to the issue. If you have multiple areas of bubbling or peeling paint, it’s time for new gutters.

4. Check for wood rot.

If you have malfunctioning gutters, rain may cascade over your home and cause wood trim to rot. If your window sills and trim rot, they won’t be able to insulate your home. If your gutters are allowing water to run down your home, it’s time to replace them.

5. You can see mildew.

Your downspouts terminate six feet away from your home to prevent mildew. Moisture that is allowed to accumulate near foundation can find its way into your basement and cause smelly mildew to grow. If you are seeing mildew grow, it’s time to get your gutters checked.
